PULSE OF THE ISLAND

Island community is a special thing. Just about everywhere you go you see someone you know. Neighborly stop-to-chats and waves from passers-by. We love that our little store is unofficially the “pulse” of the island. We love to see people eating sandwiches on their truck tailgates, and bikes piled up against the building. We love having to stock the cookie supply multiple times a day. We love that we are a stop you make on your daily island loop, even if it is just to say hi.

  • ”Thank you. It's heartwarming to live and work on Southport Island where people look out for one another—your support is a fine example of that.”
    —Southport Central School

“We anticipate a continued increase in request for assistance from island residents because of the economic effects of the pandemic so we greatly appreciate your generous gift. Thank you so much for your generosity to SIA and Southport residents. Thank you also for all you are doing to keep your customers safe during this unprecedented situation.”

    —Southport Island Association

“Thank you for your generous donation to the Southport Central School. As you likely know, the school grounds are used by many visitors to the island, especially in the summer, therefore we have decided to set aside your donation for future playground expansion and improvement. Our plan is to create more of a natural play space in the woods, with hopes of encouraging increased creative play in a natural environment.”
    —Southport Central School

  • This island is our neighborhood and what is good for the island is good for us all. Southport General Store will continue to support this community whenever possible.

An easy way to be a supportive neighbor is to attend (or host!) a community event. (Request inclusion of your event: fill out this form.)

HISTORY

In 1882, Edward Everett Pinkham, known as Everett, opened a new store in one side of his house on the hill. The store was known for years as E. E. Pinkham and Son. It stood on the site of the present store, opposite the Civil War monument.

On May 21, 1895, the store and house burned along with all of the old town records. Insurance in those days had to be renewed yearly and the policy on the store and house had run out just before the fire. Everett had been unable to get to Boothbay to renew the policy, so there was no capital with which to rebuild.

Nevertheless, the community pulled together, and, through the efforts of many volunteers, the store was rebuilt in time for the summer season of 1895, a truly marvelous example of cooperative spirit that showed the regard the community felt for Everett and his family.
